Quick Look Review: Transformers Generation Two G2 Megatron Review

Green and purple camouflage… really?

Well it was the 90s, so I guess that makes sense. Megatron here is a legendary Transformer that’s the closest you can get to being the physical embodiment of G2. This is not the first G2 Megatron we’ve looked at… but also this guy is the Megatron you think about when people say G2 Megatron.

I got my copy a few years ago and thought I could find his missing parts easily… I never did get his missiles, extra gun and sight. Well, his electronics work and that’s what’s important here!

Robot mode

It’s a bit jarring that Megatron is as big as he is. He’s not the size of a Supreme figure or a Titan but he’s big. Megatron’s about the size of an old school Leader Transformer but feels slightly denser and heavier.

That might be my imagination but Megatron’s definitely a chunky one.

His garish colours, his blocky proportions and his size just scream fun. It’s not just what he looks like that’s a good time; Megatron talks and makes noises that are just… retro. Also, he has a gigantic functional purple missile launcher mounted right next to his head.

There’s almost no posability here and while that’s bad functionally… Megatron being such a huge brick kinda adds to his charm. The only useful bits of articulation you get are in his arms and even that’s extremely restricted. Rotation at the shoulders, rotation at the biceps and elbows are enough right?

Vehicle mode

Megatron’s a big green and purple tank which means you must love him. It’s a realistic tank that’s painted in the most unrealistic camo ever. Paintjob aside, the detail Megatron has in tank mode is extremely solid when you remember this is a Transformer from the 90s.

Despite being a brick and not being able to turn his turret or aim his cannon, there’s a ton of playability here in tank mode. The cannon can be loaded with six missiles that can be cocked and fired in succession which also triggers sound effects at the same time. Also, if you roll the tank on its wheels and roll over something hard enough you trigger a metal crushing sound effects… which is ridiculously fun.

Closing

I’m gonna be honest, I don’t think anyone can be objective about G2 Megatron. He’s such an iconic oddball of a figure that you can’t say if he’s a good or bad Transformer. What I can do is give him a solid recommendation.

I do want to complete my Megatron at some point but I’ve spent years looking for his missing accessories have turned up nothing. Maybe I should see if I can get them 3D printed?
