Transformers Prime Beast Hunters Cyberverse Commander Predaking Review

Tiny, mighty dragon king.

Man, I miss the Cyberverse scale play pattern. Having smaller, relatively in-scale characters at affordable prices was awesome! Transformers Cyberworld seems to be bringing it back and I’m happy about it… but we’ll need to see how well that turns out.

It’s been awhile since we looked at a Transformers Prime Predaking, hasn’t it? I got the smallest version of him now which means I’m only missing the Voyagers at this point.

Alternate mode

Predaking is a black and orange dragon… that actually looks pretty good despite being so small. There’s no obnoxious robot mode kibble and there’s plenty of detail as well as colour to go around. The dragon head in particular looks really good… even if it’s stuck in position.

There’s not much playability or posability in dragon mode. I say that but Predaking is fun by default just because he’s a tiny orange dragon.

  • Predaking’s front legs are ball-jointed at the shoulder.
  • The front legs bend at the knees.
  • His wings are ball-jointed at one point.

The funniest thing about the dragon mode is that since the missile launcher becomes his tail, you can only aim and fire it backwards.

Transformation

The transformation is pretty standard for a Beastformer that turns into a dragon except for how the dragon and robot mode legs transform. It’s fun and the simplicity is more than forgivable at this size.

Robot mode

It genuinely surprises me how good Predaking looks in robot mode. I actually think he looks better than the first Voyager Predaking that came out. The molded details are plentiful and there’s way more paint than I was expecting.

The only real sticking point for me is that his dragon head kibble gets in the way and doesn’t peg in anywhere. This is a bit of a nitpick since you can move the kibble around to get it out of the way but still.

Predaking has is a head above most of the Cyberverse Commanders in terms of posability… because he can move his head.

  • His head can move side to side.
  • His shoulders are ball-jointed.
  • His elbows bend.
  • He rotates below the elbow.
  • He has ball-jointed hips.
  • He can bend at the knees.

Gimmicks

Predaking has a gimmick… but not like the other Cyberverse Commanders we’ve seen before. He has a weapon that has a firing missile!

It’s a pressure launcher that turns into his dragon mode tail. It fires pretty far, looks good and is a good size for Predaking.

Still, I think the light piping gimmick the other Cyberverse Commanders had would have been great on Predaking. Glowing orange parts on a dragon would have been awesome!

Toy or collectible?

Collectible.

I got whiplash looking up the prices for Predaking. He’s expensive even when he’s used and complete… which means getting him MISB will make your wallet weep.

The last MISB copy of this guy I saw sold for RM150 (about $40). That means that he’s more expensive than the first Voyager Predaking.

Closing

Predaking is awesome in both modes but something about his robot mode just really impresses me for some reason. Hasbro should really focus on making great Transformers at this scale again. They do dip into this scale once every now and then but Transformers at this scale should really be a mainstay.

I really like Commander Predaking because he packs a lot of personality into such a compact package… but he’s so expensive now man. It’s really hard to recommend him to anyone unless they’re a diehard Transformer Prime fan. If you somehow manage to find him for a good price, you should get him!
