Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen Deluxe Breakaway Review

Sad forever.

Man, I actually forgot I had Breakaway. I thought I sold him off a long time ago.

Well since he’s around, let’s take a look at him.

Vehicle mode

Breakaway is a jet and is honestly pretty average. His side profile and undercarriage are on the cleaner side of things which is nice. The feet at the back of the jet bug me though. Still, they’re not as bad as blatantly visible hands. I take issue with the colours and paint though. Breakaway just looks kind of bland. The fact that he doesn’t have any weapons in this mode just makes him feel even blander, sadly.

You know what’s not bland though? The fact that Breakaway has a completely transparent cockpit that shows of his head. Breakaway is his own pilot in jet mode. That’s just so silly that it’s hard not to love it.

For playability, Breakaway doesn’t have any weapons in this mode which is sad. He does however have three point landing gear. Only the front one is retractable but all of them have tiny rolling wheels. On a Deluxe, that’s quite impressive.

Transformation

Transforming Breakaway is pretty simple by ROTF standards but it’s still a tiny bit fiddly. Still, this is probably the only one of the bigger ROTF Transformers that a kid could transform with no problems.

That’s a plus in my books.

Robot mode

Man, Breakaway just looks bummed out. His head makes him look like he just found out MCD is sold out of the Happy Meal toy he was looking forward to the whole week.

Or you know, a whole jet just crashed into him and he now has to wear it like a coat. I do like the Breakaway’s unique look since it’s weird but still functional. Another thing I like is that there’s more colour in robot mode, so Breakaway looks less bland.

For posability, Breakaway has a major problem. His head barely moves. So much so that it pretty much has no functional head posability. That bothers me. Breakaway’s arms rotate as well as go in and out at the shoulders. He has bicep swivels and bending elbows. His hands move in at the wrists. His legs rotate as well as go in and out at the hips. He has very tight thigh swivels and his knees bend. His feet are extremely posable. They move forward and back as well as side to side. You’ve got enough posability to work with but his head not moving hurts Breakaway quite a bit.

Gimmicks

Breakaway’s Mech Alive gimmicks are pretty underwhelming honestly. The Gatling gun on his right arm is connected to a roller. Spinning the roller spins the Gatling gun. It’s not very exciting and the gun is too small.

Other than that, there are gears in his upper arms that rotate when you swivel his biceps. They’re also underwhelming but they’re a nice bit of extra detail.

Toy or collectible?

For once, I think an ROTF Transformer is more of a toy than collectible. Shocking! His two modes are good and his transformation is simple. He’s also pretty sturdy and is available pretty cheap nowadays.

For adult collectors… I only think you’d really want Breakaway to complete your ROTF collection.

Closing

Breakaway isn’t bad but I’m not gonna call him great anytime soon. He’s a good enough Transformer but he’s literally forgettable.

Still, if you want a quick Transformers fix, there are worse Transformers to pick. He’d also make a good first “big boy” Transformer for a kid.
