Transformers Revenge Of The Fallen Scout Sonar Review

Dark ship.

One of the things I miss about the older movie lines are the Scout size figures. I don’t think there were any bad Scout figures in the ROTF and 2010 HFTD lines.

Let’s see if Sonar here lives up to that standard.

Vehicle mode

Let me preface this by saying I love Sonar in warship mode. He looks incredible. There’s molded detail everywhere and the paint apps are applied cleanly. Yes, it’s black on black but he’s supposed to be stealthy. The red windows are a nice, sinister touch.

But. He is a Scout class figure. That’s just too small. He should be at least Supreme class.

Sonar has no wheels to roll on the bottom and I’m not sure if he can actually float. But he’s got two non-firing missile launchers at the rear of the ship. They can raise and swivel individually. If he was made to scale, each individual missile would be the size of a car. That’s metal.

Transformation

Sonar is quite simple to transform. But the simple transformation is nicely thought out and very intuitive. It also produces two great modes.

So really, is there any reason to complain?

Robot mode

Sonar looks mean in robot mode. I can’t believe this mold was originally meant to be an Autobot. He looks menacing. The tiny head, huge shoulders, hands and lower legs really make him seem gigantic.

Unfortunately, he is still only a Scout class. Come on, Wei Jiang/KuBianBao/anyone who will listen! Upsized KO please!

Sonar’s posability is stellar. His head is on a ball joint, his shoulders are on ball joints, he has bicep swivels, double jointed elbows, moving thumbs, a waist swivel, ball jointed hips, thigh swivels and knee bends. His posability beats out some newer Deluxe and Voyagers easily.

Oh right, his missile launchers are on his shoulders now and are even more unrestricted. So they can be put in even more positions now.

Toy or collectible?

At this point both. Sonar’s a transformer with two great modes and a simple transformation. He’s a great toy for the 10+ set of kids.

But Sonar is also part of the ROTF line, which is being hunted by collectors who missed out on it when it was new. He and Depthcharge (the original use of this mold) are still common and quite reasonably priced though, so adult collectors and kids can get him without much problem.

Closing

The ROTF and 2010 HFTD Scouts in general are considered great. And I think Sonar here is one of the best among them. Give this guy a shot! You won’t regret it.

With all the super sized KOs floating around these days, I’m wondering why this guy hasn’t been given a second glance. He’s a prime candidate for an upscale. Can you imagine a bunch of the newer 3rd Party Legends figures fighting a giant warship?! I want a Sonar the size of Generations Metroplex!
